5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice—a practice of being in your body—that ignites creativity, connection, and community.
Dancing the 5Rhythms is a practice—a dynamic way to both workout and to meditate in the same breath. They teach us that life is energy in motion, freeing us from any fixed notions about people, places, objects or ideas.
In dancing 5Rhythms you can unearth a freestyle movement vocabulary rooted in unexpected, fresh ways of moving—visceral and highly personal.

DESCRIPTION
Emerging Waves is a space held by a 5Rhythms Teacher in Training. In this 5Rhythm class, you are invited to move through the 5Rhythms with simple guidance, exploring body parts giving space for your personal expression.
Music becomes the teacher alongside the trainee, supporting your movement practice through the Waves map of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness.
Rooted in the teachings of Gabrielle Roth, 5Rhythms® is practiced by tens of thousands of people around the world. It is a movement meditation, a creative path, and a philosophy grounded in the belief that when we move, we heal.
Movement becomes both medicine and metaphor - opening space for personal insight, and embodied presence.
This practice welcomes every body, every culture, every age, and every level of experience. Wherever the 5Rhythms are danced, a community forms - one that moves together, sweats together, grows together, and supports one another's freedom and authenticity.
Here we meet ourselves and each other with curiosity, kindness, and the courage to be real.
Q. What is the difference between classes and workshops?
A. Classes are short-format Waves sessions, the foundational 5Rhythms map, that occur on a regular (generally weekly) schedule and typically last for 2 hours. Classes are open to anyone from new-comers to long-time practitioners of any age or physical condition unless otherwise noted in the class listing.
Q. Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?
A. No experience or level of fitness is required to begin your 5Rhythms practice.
Q. I have/had an injury. Can I still do 5Rhythms?
A. The 5Rhythms is a simple and flexible practice that can be experienced by anyone regardless of their physical limitations. Because there is no specific “routine” to follow you will be able to participate at your own pace, within your own capacity to move.
Q. What happens in a 5Rhythms class?
A. While every class is different each class will provide basic instruction in the 5Rhythms, whether that is the full Wave (the 5Rhythms in sequence) or focusing on one or another of the rhythms and its energies. There will be a warm-up period (often uninstructed but may include facilitation), a teaching, and exercises for exploring the teaching. Teachers may use a variety of different kinds of music, or no music at all, to support embodying the rhythms. There may be a combination of individual, partnered, and group work. Some classes are more structured than others but all classes provide the opportunity to be moved by and with the 5Rhythms.
Q. What do I need to bring to a 5Rhythms class?
A. It is suggested that you dress comfortably in clothing that you don’t mind sweating in and allows you a full range of motion. You may want to bring a cover-up so you don’t get cold, and/or a small towel to dry off with. We dance bare-footed or in light-soled dance shoes (athletic shoes/trainers are not allowed on the dance floor). Bring a bottle of water and your curiosity. That’s all you need.
ABOUT DAVID:
Personal growth and transformation is central to who I am. It has found different forms over the years. But some key themes are inquiry, listening, and release. When one is truly heard profound release can happen. I'm a believer in the power of listening. We want quick answers. What is we're willing to hang out in the unknown, and even the uncomfortable? And remain in the state of inquiry, rather than jumping into the state of answers? It seems like things can keep building up. What enables release?
I am a 5Rhythms® Teacher in Training. For me, 5Rhythms is an inquiry into what does your body have to say to you? How can you discover your authentic movement? Things get stuck. How do you release them? What becomes available in the new-found freedom after release?
5Rhythms offers a path of embodied transformation — a direct, physical way to access what is going on for me, release what no longer serves, and reconnect with what is most alive and authentic. I am a musician — French horn, piano, and composer.
When my sister Karen first brought me to her 5Rhythms class, it felt like home. The full spectrum of music took me over — as the sounds washed over me, it brought me into the present moment. Some time later, my sister offered a 5Rhythms workshop called "Grief and Loss." I had just lost my daughter.
In that space, I experienced the profound healing capacity of 5Rhythms. Its creator, Gabrielle Roth, wrote: “Put your body in motion, and the psyche will heal itself.” Through moving my body, I found tears, the depth of connection, and release.
I have invented a number of medical devices. I hold 12 patents and have 26 publications. Inventing starts with inquiry. I have to not know, in order to discover something new. What I invent while dancing is my creation, and an ongoing discovery of who I really am. I have to let go of knowing in order to discover what is my authentic motion?
My teaching is an inquiry and exploration of tonalities, movement, awakening, and transformation. In my space you are invited to explore your own rhythm, your own story, your own freedom in motion. Creating community is central to what I create.
"Underneath it all we are tribal individuals. We seek connection because we need to know we are not alone on this planet."
- Gabrielle Roth
